Our Water Management Engineering team is looking for a Technical Director to join them. Reporting to the Water Management Technical Services Leader, you will lead a team of 30+ people across multiple offices who provide services across the whole spectrum of dams and reservoirs, river engineering, waterways, nature-based solutions and asset management and is looking to expand its coastal engineering offering.

Because we’re such a diverse business, we can offer you variety as standard. The work within the Team can span across all stages of assets lifecycle, from feasibility and optioneering through concept and detailed design, planning and environmental consents, to site supervision and asset refurbishment, as well as providing tailored client services to support the development of flood alleviation and infrastructure schemes. You’ll get to work on a range of different projects for regulators, local government bodies, infrastructure providers, water companies, developers and investors and you would be expected to interface and work in collaboration with the other Design and Engineering Team Leads within Water and Energy.

Role accountabilities:

The role will require you to visit site locations throughout the UK from time to time and will see you leading liaison with our clients and consultation with regulators. Collaborating, learning, thinking proactively and creatively forms the ethos of the team and a fundamental part of your role. In addition, your day-to-day activities will include:

Developing the line management structure of team, which supports staff’s welfare and development, and the resourcing and delivery of projects.
Taking on management duties for circ. 3-5 members of staff.
Manage and expand our dams and reservoirs capability.
Supporting the development and implementation of the team’s business strategy and marketing plan.
Developing client relationships and new opportunities, enhancing our reputation and market position.
Leading bid work including preparing, contributing to and reviewing commercial and technical aspects of bids/tenders.
Setting and maintaining the technical direction and oversight on projects within the team including writing, checking and review of deliverables, with financial/commercial responsibility.
Managing projects, taking responsibility for own personal time and resource management, and coordinating team members, managing subcontractors, quality assurance and client feedback and ensuring effective communication of any changes/modifications.
Working in collaboration with specialists from other engineering and environmental disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall project.
Responsible for all commercial aspects (contract, invoicing, debt management, client management etc) relating to projects for which you have responsibility to ensure a successful outcome.
Maintaining and enhance our external reputation by speaking at external events, preparing articles for publication and working with relevant professional bodies.
Taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential, including mentoring colleagues to achieve appropriate professional qualifications (e.g. CEng ).
Being familiar and compliant with relevant H&S regulations and promoting a culture of awareness within the team

Qualifications & Experience:

Supervising Panel Engineer under the Reservoir Act 1975 or working towards it
Experience of working on major infrastructure projects and dams and reservoirs.
Ability to lead design, inspection and asset management projects relating to river engineering, coastal and waterways.
Solid understanding of the National Planning Policy Framework (England) Technical Advice Note 15: Development and Flood Risk (Wales), and Reservoirs Act 1975.
Experience of preparing client proposals, leading on presentations to prospective clients, bidding/tendering for internal and external opportunities and strong commercial awareness
Experienced team leader / line manager.
Degree in an appropriate analytical subject (Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Engineering Hydrology)
Chartered status with CIWEM or ICE
